Strategy PhilosophyDisciplined Investing
At Harvest, we believe in a disciplined approach to investing. Our approach may not be glamorous and maybe not even very exciting… but what it lacks in flash, it tends to makes up for with history. As the old adage says, "history repeats itself". And although no investment strategy can be guaranteed to repeat their results, we believe that with the right approach to selecting investment strategies, the formula for success doesn't change.
Typically, investment plans are started, held, and sold out of emotion. Plans are started in order to save for a dream. Decisions are made chasing whatever is performing today. Investments are sold because the roller-coaster ride of the market has been too exhausting. All the more reason we need a disciplined approach.
Disciplined investing doesn't necessarily mean active. Active management involves timing the market. Attempting to "buy low" and "sell high" proves to be tricky even for the best money managers. No matter how educated and experienced the money manager or analyst, emotion can play its part.
A disciplined investment approach will use a passive management philosophy that doesn't allow money managers to make decisions based on emotion. The core of a disciplined approach is in its fundamental formula applied to the securities selection process. This process utilizes an objective, impartial methodology which provides investors with:
- Diversification - Quality stocks are the core make-up of a disciplined approach
- Formula Based - Mathematical formulas are used in the investment selection process to keep the strategy less susceptible to emotional errors that can derail your plans.
- Transparent - Within a disciplined strategy, investors know what they own and why.
- Consistently Applied - Style drift is avoided because the investment selection process is the same year after year. Only stocks that meet the objective criteria are chosen to be in the portfolio.
